This year, the “Tet Street Corner” decoration programme, launched by the Ho Chi Minh City chapter of the Vietnam Fatherland Front under the theme “Solidarity Spring – Compassionate Tet”, has become a cultural highlight, helping to strengthen community bonds. Simple yet carefully crafted displays featuring thatched-roof houses, hearths, steaming pots of banh chung (traditional square sticky rice cakes) and rustic market stalls bring Tet traditions to life through the collective effort of local residents.
Mai Thi Kim Thu, head of residential group 12 in Cho Quan Ward, said the initiative has been maintained for many years and continues to gain wider public support. What began modestly has gradually grown into a shared space that allows residents to recall how Tet was celebrated in the past and appreciate how life has changed, she noted, adding that this year’s warm atmosphere was made possible by the joint efforts of the entire neighbourhood.
The festive spirit has also spread to modern residential areas. At Cinic Riverside apartment complex in Binh Dong Ward, a “Vietnamese Tet corner” has been set up early, creating a familiar and intimate spring space amid high-rise buildings. Bamboo furniture, red calligraphy scrolls and traditional rice cakes have stirred nostalgia among many residents.
Pham Van Quyen, a representative of the building’s management board, said the decorations aim to recreate the traditional Tet experience in an urban setting, particularly for people living far from their hometowns. The space offers residents a chance to reconnect with childhood memories and the rural roots that shaped them, he said.
Across neighbourhoods, preparations for Tet have become a common activity. Adults and children work together to arrange flower pots and lights, while women in Ao dai (national traditional long dress) pose for photos. Some residents even prepare banh chung and banh tet (traditional cylindrical sticky rice cakes) adding to the festive mood.
Despite different expressions, from rustic tradition to modern creativity, a unifying image stands out: the red national flag fluttering in the spring sun. More than a seasonal symbol, it shows patriotism, solidarity and mutual care – values that define the city’s community spirit.
“Solidarity Spring – Compassionate Tet” has thus become a bridge connecting people with one another. Amid the bustle of urban life, these spring street corners bring warmth and neighbourly ties, allowing the spirit of Spring to reach every street and resonate in the hearts of city residents.
