VOV.VN - Large crowds of people flock to the Âm Dương Market (Yin-Yang market) in Bac Ninh province held at midnight on February 20 with the spiritual meaning of “buying luck and selling misfortune”, offering a symbolic space where the living and the deceased are believed to meet.
The market is held only once a year, from the evening of the 4th day of the Lunar New Year to the early morning of the 5th day of the first lunar month, in Xuan O village, Vo Cuong ward.
This is a traditional custom deeply rooted in the spiritual and folk beliefs of the Kinh Bac region. According to local belief, on this night the “gate to the underworld” opens, allowing the spirits of the deceased to reunite with the living.
The market is said to be linked to a battle during the time of the Trưng Sisters (43 AD), where many soldiers were killed. It is seen as a way to commemorate the fallen and preserve the spiritual traditions of the Kinh Bac region.
This year, thousands of locals and tourists from across the country flock to the Âm Dương Market on the night of the 4th Lunar New Year day, creating scenes described as a sea of people.
The event attracts not only local residents but also visitors from other provinces and even foreign tourists eager to experience this unique cultural tradition.
The market takes place in the dark of night, lit dimly by oil lamps. The sounds of footsteps and whispered conversations create a mystical atmosphere, very different from ordinary markets.
This year, local authorities have reconstructed the Yin–Yang Market model to help preserve and promote the traditional spiritual and cultural values of the ancient Kinh Bac region.
Visitors typically do not bargain when buying goods. The market is less about commercial trade and more about spiritual meaning.
Effigies line the road to the symbolic gates of the underworld.
The restored area is packed with residents and visitors eager to witness the ritual.
People come to offer incense, burn votive paper for the deceased, and pray for peace, luck and prosperity in the new year.
One notable tradition is buying black chickens, believed to symbolise mystery and good fortune during this special night.
Rich in the folk traditions of the Kinh Bac region, the Âm Dương Market, held in the early days of Spring, draws crowds of locals, pilgrims from afar, and even foreign visitors.
