Neatly laid-out bougainvillea plots form a mosaic of red, pink and orange hues amid green gardens in Vinh Thanh commune, Vinh Long province, where the craft has developed over more than two decades and expanded rapidly in recent years.
Nguyen Thi Hien, a bougainvillea grower with more than 15 years of experience in Phu Son, says this year’s plants feature a wider range of colours and designs, including newly bred variegated-leaf varieties, with sizes tailored to different market segments.
Local growers successfully graft multi-coloured bougainvillea, with three, four or even five colours on a single plant, now selling for between VND150,000 and VND500,000 per pot depending on the variety.
A key advantage of Phu Son bougainvillea is its durability, with the plants able to tolerate salinity levels of up to 3%, giving them an edge over many other Tet flowers.
Transport trucks from Ho Chi Minh City and southeastern provinces line up at Phu Son flower village to purchase and consign bougainvillea in the early days of the twelfth lunar month.
Demand is expected to pick up over the next two weeks as spring flower markets in Ho Chi Minh City and the southeastern region officially open.
The Phu Son bougainvillea village brand is expected to gain wider international recognition, helping establish a clear identity on Vietnam’s agricultural map and enabling deeper access to modern distribution channels and the global market.
With supply well prepared, Phu Son’s bougainvillea growers are ready for the peak trading season of the year.
